Clay 3D

Soft, matte, pastel shapes that look like modelling clay, gently bobbing.

Prompt to build it

Build a clay-style 3D scene of pastel spheres and a capsule. Fake soft matte shading with offset radial gradients and inset shadows, soft ground shadows, and slow staggered bobbing. Make it responsive, cap devicePixelRatio at 2, pause when off-screen, and show a still frame when prefers-reduced-motion is set. No external libraries.

How it works

Radial gradients with an offset highlight and a darker rim fake soft 3D shading; blurred shadows underneath and slow bobbing animation sell the weight.

Guardrails

  • Keep contrast up on any labels; pastel on pastel fails easily.
  • Respect prefers-reduced-motion: show a still frame instead of the animation.
  • Pause when off-screen or when the tab is hidden (IntersectionObserver + visibilitychange).
  • Keep text off busy animated areas, or give it a solid backing that passes WCAG contrast.
  • One showpiece effect per page. If everything moves, nothing stands out.
